The contributors and supporters launch at the Avalon Bowling Club on 4 December began with an electrical storm and plenty of rain. Despite all this cosmic energy quite a few managed to brave the elements to receive thanks from a grateful publisher and meet the others. It was fun to see a gaggle of historians (with Dr Keith Vincent Smith, Shelag Champion AM, and Geoff Searl), a cluster of artists/illustrators (Michael Glasheeh, Ian Faulkner), and a pod of photographers (Ian Bird, Peter Solness, Alex Marks, Murray Van der Veer, Jules Phillips, Mandy Zeiron and Stretch). It was also lovely to see some of the families who supported the project, such as the Ralstons and Ron Perrott's family. A big thank you to everyone who came along.
MANLY ART GALLERY LAUNCH
The launch for Saltwater People of the Broken Bays held at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum on Saturday 26 November went extremely well with close to 100 attending. Bob Waterer did a strong Welcome to Country, and was followed by guest speakers Jack Thompson and Jeff McMullen AM. Jeff McMullen needs little introduction. He is well respected for his work on the boards of the Jimmy Little Foundation, the Ian Thorpe Fountain for Youth, and AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience). Jack Thompson also needs little introduction but few would know that he was born in Manly and grew up on the northern beaches. Apart from his international acting career Jack has also been actively engaged in many projects with Aboriginal communities around the country. Recently he has been working with Professor Paul Tacon to help preserve Aboriginal art sites, and is keen to ensure that endangered Eora sites are protected.
Jack and Jeff were hard acts to follow but I spoke about the book and am happy to say that I got to practice my signature afterwards with the book signings. More practice is needed however.
